I had been sponsoring a child in Egypt for the last eight years until I received a letter saying that she and her family left the Plan USA area.
No word, no tangible reason. My eyes just stared at this piece of paper as I have seen this little girl grow up through pictures and translated stories, and now “Poof!” Gone.
Fatma had to get eyeglasses at a very young age, I believe it was around 2-3 years old. My contribution helped her to get her glasses, and at least that is what I was told. I have pictures of she and her friends through the years, and just seeing her grow, go to school, and hoping my small contribution from far, far away may do something, just something tiny to make her life a bit easier was all that I could hope, and hope I did.
Articles, books have been written how if a young girl learns a skill, gains an education that possibly enables her to gain autonomy, it can literally change their culture, their economy, that then ventures outward creating a rippling-effect of positivity. There is a cultural-effect of goodness, happiness, self-reliance, self-assurance that women can be their own. I chose to sponsor a female child for this reason – did not matter from what country.
Minute changes is “The little engine that could” –
So, since the sudden departure of Fatma in my life, I was then informed another young girl would be grateful for my sponsorship. I am presented with a story, location, and a young girls face.
I receive her letter and the translated letter from Eunice today. She is 12 years old and lives in Malawi:
Dear Tessa,
I have written this letter to express my gratitude for choosing me to be your friend. I do not take this for granted. I really appreciate.
The weather in Malawi gets cold especially during the months of June and July. How is the weather in your country? In terms of food, many people love eating local food called nsima which you make from processed maize (flour). What is your staple food? In terms of livestock, many love raising chickens and goats which help many to earn money after selling them. What animals are raised in your country?
Lastly, I and my entire family wishes you and your entire family all the best.
Eunice
One sits and says thanks for many and all that surrounds each and every one of us.
It is passed on by the written word, a smile, a hug, a laugh, and the thoughts which give us reflection of all of which makes us human. This is never lost. It is present everywhere.
And I wish Eunice and her entire family all the best, period. But, for also passing on by creating and expanding so much life, and a stirring of gentle wisdom in such a tiny space.
